The following documents are required:
- Police Disposition Form or a Notarized Affidavit from the Towing and Storage Company stating:
- Year, Make, and Vehicle Identification Number(VIN)
- Who requested the Vehicle to be towed
- Reason the Vehicle was towed
- Date vehicle was towed
- Location from which the Vehicle was towed and where it was towed to.
- Sheriff’s Inspection
- Two (2) Certified Letters or return receipts if the letters were signed for.
- The first letter must be sent within 10 working days of the vehicle being towed or only towing, and/or 10 days storage can be charged.
- The fee for towing and/or storage must be included in your letter.
- The second certified letter must be sent 10 or more days before the vehicle is sold.
- After 45 days or more of no response/reply, the vehicle can be sold.
- Three (3) Newspaper advertisements that must be ran one day a week for three straight weeks, this is usually placed in the legal section of the local newspaper with the largest circulation.
- Newspaper receipt or affidavit stating the dates the advertisements were published.
- The Affidavit of Motor Vehicle Sale (TC96-159) form, completed by towing and storage company.
- Kentucky Application for Certificate of Title and Registration form (TC96-182). The Seller’s section on the left-hand side needs to be completed by the towing and storage company and the Sheriff’s inspection completed if it is an Out-of-State Vehicle.
- All prior liens must be satisfied before title can be issued.
- All the above mentioned documentation must be entered into the Kentucky transportation system at your local County Clerk’s Office.
